Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently shared new details about the advice he gave Lane Kiffin before Kiffin accepted the LSU Tigers head coaching job.

Speaking during SEC Media Days, Saban said Kiffin reached out while weighing his options and asked for guidance. Rather than telling him what decision to make, Saban said he asked Kiffin what he ultimately wanted to accomplish. When Kiffin responded that his goal was to win a national championship, Saban pointed to LSU as a program with the resources and tradition to make that a possibility.

Saban also emphasized one of LSU’s biggest advantages, which is recruiting. He noted that Louisiana consistently produces elite NFL level talent on a regular basis and that many of the state’s top players grow up wanting to play for the Tigers. That built-in recruiting edge, combined with LSU’s history of postseason success, made Baton Rouge an attractive destination for Kiffin.

While Saban acknowledged he believed LSU offered Kiffin an ideal opportunity, he stopped short of saying he told him to take the job. Instead, he stressed that if winning a national title was Kiffin’s priority, LSU gave him the best chance to achieve that goal, as long as everyone within the program is on the same page.
