Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer added a historic milestone to his postseason résumé Saturday night as the Stars stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 in Game 7 and advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With the win, DeBoer became the first head coach or manager in NHL, NBA, or MLB history to reach nine career Game 7 victories. His teams are now 9-0 all-time in such matchups.

The Stars trailed entering the third period but scored four unanswered goals, including a first-ever third-period hat trick from former Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen and a power-play, game-winning goal by Wyatt Johnston.

“I think (Rantanen) answered that question,” DeBoer said about people's questioning Rantanen's postseason numbers being a product of playing along with superstar teammates in Colorado. “I’ve had a lot of playoff runs, and I know I haven’t had a player string together the three games he strung together—5, 6, and 7—how dominant he’s been shift to shift.”

DeBoer, now in his second season with Dallas, has led the Stars to three Game 7 wins since taking over behind the bench.

The club eliminated the Seattle Kraken in a seven-game series in 2023 and defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round last year.

DeBoer had previously collected Game 7 wins with the New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, and Vegas.

DeBoer’s playoff career now includes a 92-76 record in 168 games, good for a .548 winning percentage. Despite reaching the Stanley Cup Final with New Jersey in 2012 and San Jose in 2016, DeBoer has yet to win a championship.

The Stars finished the regular season with 106 points and will face the winner of Sunday's Game 7 between the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues.
