Hey, look at Haynes King and Carson Beck. Who would've thought?
To the surprise (and delight) of many, the Hall of Fame Game was actually a worthwhile watch this time around. And that's thanks, in huge part, to the rookie quarterbacks for the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals.
Beck, a third-round pick for Arizona from this past spring, opened quite a few eyes in what was an impressive start. The former SEC and ACC standout, who was certainly no stranger to the national spotlight, completed 15 of his 19 passes for a game-high 188 yards and a touchdown.
Then, of course, we have our hero in King—who carried the bulk of the outing under center for Carolina. The undrafted free-agent signee ended up connecting on 21 of his 34 throws for 180 yards and two touchdowns and scored the game-winning score on an exhilarating 5-yard rush as time expired.
As they did back in college two seasons ago, when Beck's Georgia Bulldogs rallied to beat King's Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in a 44-42 shootout, the two passers came together to give us a wild back-and-forth affair.
