NFL free agency got off to a strong start for the New Orleans Saints on Monday. Despite losing linebacker Demario Davis to the Jets and cornerback Alontae Taylor to the Titans, New Orleans addressed a few pressing needs on the first day of free agent negotiations. The Saints agreed to terms with guard David Edwards, running back Travis Etienne, tight end Noah Fant, and punter Ryan Wright on Monday.
New Orleans still has a few notable needs as the NFL heads toward the official start of the new league year on Wednesday. Wide receiver could be one position on their radar. Here are some potential targets that may interest the Saints as a new weapon for quarterback Tyler Shough.
Jennings has also been a popular pairing for many but could possibly be signed to a somewhat reasonable one-year deal in a quiet receiver market so far. Kirk is in the same position as Jennings. Both were expected to get big money but are coming off disappointing production last season.
Keenan Allen signing with the Saints makes sense to some, at least on paper. Allen has spent all but one of his 13 NFL seasons with the Chargers. One of those years, in 2023, was with current Saints head coach Kellen Moore as his offensive coordinator. A prototype possession receiver, Allen is coming off 81 catches for 777 yards. Shepard is another 30+ wideout avaliable, and could be had on a cheap deal.
rown is known as a big-play wideout, but has underrated skills on shorter throws that could be enticing. As a rookie, Tolbert played for Kellen Moore when he was offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. Josh Reynolds has bounced around extensively over his nine seasons, but is a quality depth piece. Mooney could be an underrated free agent addition, depending on his asking price, while Dortch is an undersized speedster who could be used on punt returns.
New Orleans is expected to sign Chris Olave to a lucrative contract extension. With Devaughn Vele returning and Ja'Lynn Polk added in a trade last offseason, the Saints will not be spending huge money on Doubs or any other high-priced wideout. Having said that, receiver is still an offseason need to surround Shough with more weapons.Expect the Saints to add a receiver somewhere in the first few rounds of the draft. Free agency is a possibility, but only to add depth or at a reasonable cap hit. Allen makes sense if he's willing to accept a mentorship role to Polk or a potential rookie. Mooney or Jennings are outside possibilities as a number 2 wideout, most likely on a one-year deal. Other than them, the Saints will likely wait until further along in free agency to add depth to their receiver room.
