Newcastle United have reignited their pursuit of Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli after suffering a setback in the race for Spain international Victor Munoz. The Magpies were left reeling after Liverpool pulled off a last-minute transfer hijack to sign Munoz from Osasuna for €40 million, forcing Newcastle’s recruitment team to pivot quickly back to their long-term Moroccan target. With head coach Eddie Howe keen to fill the attacking void left by Anthony Gordon’s £70 million move to Barcelona, Ezzalzouli has returned to the top of the club’s summer shortlist. Newcastle had monitored the ‘spectacular’ 24-year-old winger closely before focusing their efforts on Munoz. After missing out on their primary target, sporting director Ross Wilson is now prepared to back Howe in ensuring Newcastle land a new winger at St James’ Park.

However, securing Abde will require a major financial commitment, though Newcastle have the funds available following their recent high-profile player sale. The Magpies could bypass lengthy negotiations with Real Betis by triggering Ezzalzouli’s £51 million (€60 million) buyout clause to avoid another market battle. While Betis may consider offers around €50 million, strong interest in Abde across Europe gives the La Liga side significant leverage, especially as Barcelona retain a 20% sell-on clause from his initial move.

Ezzalzouli is coming off a superb individual campaign under Manuel Pellegrini, scoring 15 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions to help Betis secure a historic Champions League qualification. His combination of aggressive dribbling, elite pace, and tactical versatility makes him an ideal candidate to replicate Gordon’s impact on Tyneside. After picking up an injury in Morocco’s final pre-World Cup friendly, Abde is currently unable to showcase his talents on the global stage at the ongoing World Cup.
