The Los Angeles Rams' newest defensive chess piece sounds willing and able to move all over the board.
Trent McDuffie, whom the Rams acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason, told reporters in his introductory press conference that he'll play all over the field in a variety of positions if that's what's needed of him from the coaching staff.
“Just like I told [head coach] Sean McVay, just like I told [defensive coordinator] Chris Shula, like I told [defensive backs coach] Jimmy Lake, it doesn’t matter where you put me. I'll play safety. I'll put my hand in the dirt if I have to. I hope I don't have to, but truly I'm out here wanting to play ball," McDuffie said. "No matter where you put me, I'm going to work day in and day out to make sure that I do my job at a very high level. That's the guy you’re getting. Whether I'm nickel, whether I'm at corner, no matter what it is, I want to make sure that when I step on that field, you're going to get the best of me.”
This is exactly what the Rams were looking for out of their defensive backs. McDuffie proved to be a versatile defensive weapon in his four seasons with the Chiefs, playing snaps at cornerback, in the slot, in the box and even on the defensive line. According to Pro Football Focus, here are McDuffie's snap alignments over his four-year career:
While McDuffie's clear value is at cornerback, it's refreshing to know he can play inside and outside as well.
The Rams have lacked a true No. 1 lockdown cornerback since they moved on from Jalen Ramsey. They now have that threat in McDuffie for the foreseeable future.
