A new starting quarterback is headed for the NFC North. The Minnesota Vikings are signing former No. 1 overall pick and Arizona Cardinals starter Kyler Murray to a one-year deal, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Murray will represent the latest reclamation project for Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings, who are pivoting at quarterback after a disappointing season from 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota previously struck gold with Sam Darnold, another top pick attempting to revive his career, during the 2024 season. A one-year deal gives Murray a chance to rebuild his value as a starter and Minnesota a chance to evaluate him as a long-term option.
Murray was released by the Cardinals on Wednesday. He visited Minnesota on Thursday and quickly agreed to a deal.
The Packers are 2-0 overall against Murray as a starter -- a 24-21 win capped off by a Rasul Douglas interception in the end zone in 2021 and a comfortable 34-13 win at Lambeau Field in 2024. Murray was injured and did not play in last season's meeting with the Cardinals in Arizona.
Murray played in only five games for Jonathan Gannon and the Cardinals last season after suffering a foot injury. He completed 110 of 163 passes (68.3 percent) for 962 yards, six touchdown passes and three interceptions. His passer rating was 88.6, and the Cardinals went 2-3.
Murray has started 87 career games over a seven-year NFL career. He led the Cardinals to the playoffs just once, during the 2021 season, and is 0-1 as a starter in the postseason. The Cardinals were 38-48-1 in games started by Murray.
Because he is still owed over $30 million from the Cardinals in 2026, the Vikings are signing Murray to a veteran minimum deal.
Murray joins Jared Goff and Caleb Williams as the three No. 1 overall picks in the NFC North.
