Esports is taking center stage on television.

On June 26, Season 2 of Esports World Cup: Level Up debuts exclusively on Prime Video, offering a behind-the-scenes look at competitors from more than 100 countries chasing millions in prize money at one of the world's biggest gaming events.

The series is coming at a time when competitive gaming is experiencing unprecedented growth, reaching audiences that stretch across the globe and generating billions in revenue.

"Esports is one of the most dynamic cultural movements of our time," said Emmy-winning filmmaker R. J. Cutler, who directed the series.

Competitive gaming now reaches roughly 3.6 billion people worldwide in some form and generates nearly $200 billion annually, making it one of the largest entertainment industries in the world. What was once viewed as a niche hobby has evolved into a global competitive ecosystem blending sports, entertainment and digital culture.

Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports Foundation, said the industry has reached an important turning point.

"Players are chasing their dreams, clubs are building sustainable futures, and fans are rallying on a global stage," he said.

The investment reflects that momentum. In 2026, the Esports Foundation committed more than $100 million to the industry, supporting marquee events including the seven-week Esports World Cup, which begins July 6 in Paris, along with the inaugural Esports Nations Cup in Saudi Arabia later this year.

Fabien Devide, chairman and co-founder of Team Vitality, pointed to the global impact of last year's competition.

"The scale of the event, followed by fans at home and around the world, showed just how influential esports has become," he said.

Even high-profile sports stars are taking notice. Chess champion Magnus Carlsen captured the 2025 Esports World Cup title, while skateboarding icon Tony Hawk was among the notable figures in attendance.

The growth also stands in contrast to some newer sports properties that continue searching for long-term stability. While ventures like LIV Golf have faced ongoing questions about their sustainability despite significant financial backing, esports has benefited from an audience that already exists and continues expanding each year.
