The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the finalists for the 21st annual Stopper of the Year Award, presented to the nation’s top relief pitcher. Nebraska’s J’Shawn Unger was named one of 14 finalists for the award following a successful season.
Unger tallied 13 saves on the year, earning a 6-1 record after pitching 40 innings across 25 games in relief. He struck out 39 batters on the year, earning him a 4.05 ERA and a .203 opposing batting average. His 13 saves rank him fifth nationally, the top four all finalists, and tied him for third in Nebraska program history for saves in a season.
Unger ended the season with four straight saves, including one in Nebraska's win over South Dakota State in the first game of the Lincoln Regional. He fired four strikeouts in his 2.2 innings on the mound in the win, one shy of his season high. Unger earned six straight saves at one point in the season and pitched eight games in relief on the year without surrendering a hit and five games without allowing a runner on base.
The NCBWA Stopper of the Year will be announced during a news conference at the College World Series on June 12 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
