Perhaps one day Penn State basketball will be a team that can make an appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament a little more frequently than once a decade or so. Loyal Penn State fans can seemingly only dream of having the same kind of fun this time of year that the upper half of the conference's fandom seems to be enjoying. That is especially true this year as the Big Ten is filling the most spots in this year's Sweet 16 of the tournament.
The Big Ten is sending six teams -- Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, Nebraska, and Iowa -- into the second weekend of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and there is a decent chance of seeing multiple Big Ten teams advance to the Elite Eight to compete for a spot in the Final Four. With six teams in the Sweet 16, the Big Ten has at least two more representatives in the tournament remaining than any other conference. Thanks to a stunning upset pulled by Iowa against No. 1 seed and defending national champion Florida, the Big Ten has two more teams in the field than the SEC.
The South Region will see three Big Ten teams playing in the next round with No. 3-seed Illinois taking on last year's runners-up, No. 2-seed Houston. The other half of that bracket will see a fun rivalry matchup between Nebraska and Iowa. Nebraska won its first NCAA tournament game in program history and followed that up by booking a trip to the Sweet 16. Iowa got by Clemson and Florida to reserve its spot in the Sweet 16. Illinois cruised by Penn and VCU in its first two matchups, but the degree of difficulty will ramp up against Houston.
No. 1 Michigan had little trouble getting by Howard and Saint Louis in its first two games. The Wolverines will face No. 4-seed Alabama in its next game in the MidWest Region. Purdue, the No. 2-seed in the West is also facing an SEC opponent in the Sweet 16 when they face No. 11-seed Texas, the only double-digit-seeded team remaining in the bracket. Texas has taken out BYU and Gonzaga while Purdue has defeated Queens and Miami to reach this stage.
Michigan State, the No. 3-seed in the East, is the last Big Ten team standing in the region. The Spartans have defeated North Dakota State and Louisville to reach the Sweet 16. They will now face UConn in the next round after the Huskies eliminated No. 7 UCLA. Wisconsin and Ohio State were eliminated from the tournament in the first round.
Perhaps it is fitting that the Big Ten is performing as well as it is in the tournament. After all, the Final Four will be held in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Of course, this is the stadium that is home to the Big Ten football championship game and Indianapolis is no stranger to hosting the Big Ten basketball tournament either. A Big Ten team winning it all in Indianapolis would be the cherry on top for the Big Ten and the perfect follow-up to witnessing Indiana win the College Football Playoff national championship.
As for Penn State? Well, there is a long way to go to building a team that will be participating in the tournament any time soon. Unless Penn State can pull off a stunner and flip Dylan Mingo from North Carolina, it could be a while before the Nittany Lions are among the Big Ten teams thinking about a spot in the Sweet 16. The goal for Penn State is simply making the tournament right now.
