NASCAR has suspended driver Daniel Dye after he used homophobic language to mock IndyCar driver David Malukas in a recent livestream.

In a video circulating on social media in which Dye opened packs of sports cards on the Whatnot streaming platform, the 22-year-old Kaulig Racing truck driver recalled meeting the Team Penske driver last year — and had no idea who Malukas was at the time, according to The Athletic.

“I was like, ‘Do y’all race any ovals?’ ” Dye said on the stream. “And he was, like, distraught that I asked him that question. He was like, ‘Yeah, we race Nashville and Iowa …’ I was like, ‘I didn’t know Miatas went to Nashville.’ ”

Dye continued, “He’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, yas, we race Indianapolis, too. Love Indianapolis. And Roger Penske. I love Roger. Love you, Roger!’ ” Dye said, imitating the 24-year-old.

Dye then added: “As soon as I start doing a David Malukas gay voice, I hit a gold [card]. So let’s keep it going.”

Both NASCAR and Kaulig Racing have suspended Dye, they said in a statement on Tuesday, March 17. Dye then apologized for his actions in a post on X.

"I chose my words poorly, and I understand why it upset people," he wrote. "I'm sorry to anyone who was offended. That's not how I want to represent myself.”

He added, "I have some close friends in the LBGTQ+ community who I would never want to feel less of themselves because of what I said, and that's exactly why I should hold myself to a higher standard."

Team Penske hired Malukas, who placed second at the Indianapolis 500 last year, to replace veteran Will Power this season. He is currently sixth in the IndyCar standings.

Dye stands at 13th in the NASCAR Truck Series standings, and his best finish was 13th in his three races this season.

The Florida native said in his statement that he “didn’t think enough” before he spoke, and that he didn’t mean “any harm.”

“I know that intention does not erase impact and I need to do better,” he wrote.
