Naomi Osaka pulled off a huge upset on Sunday, knocking off Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Sabalenka entered the women's singles draw as the overall No. 1 seed for the tournament.

Osaka won by scores of 6-2, 7-6 (2).

After Osaka dominated the first set, Sabalenka looked more like herself in the second set, and it was more back-and-forth, leading to a tiebreaker.

Sabalenka entered with a stellar tiebreaker streak. She had won 21 consecutive tiebreakers at grand slams, but that ended on Sunday. Osaka won the second set tiebreaker, 7-2, to take the match.

She will advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face No. 10 Karolina Muchova. This will be the first time Osaka has made it to the quarterfinals in her sixth Wimbledon appearance.

Osaka is still searching for her first Wimbledon championship. Currently, she has four major wins, two at the Australian Open and two at the US Open in singles competition.

Sabalenka's exit is another frustrating result for the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world. After winning the 2025 U.S. Open, she was beaten in the 2026 Australian Open.

Last month, Sabalenka lost in the French Open quarterfinals and, in a moment of frustration, mentioned that she felt like quitting tennis.

She took back her comments after cooling off from the loss, but another early exit from a grand slam could bring back those same frustrations. Sabalenka will have two months to prepare for a better result at the US Open, where she is reigning champion for the last two years.

This year's Wimbledon tournament has had no shortage of upsets. The top three women's seeds have now been eliminated from contention, with the best seed remaining being No. 4 Jessica Pegula, who has already punched her ticket into the quarterfinals.
