When the news first hit my computer, I remember typing the words "2027 comeback" with a sense of optimism. We had seen him rope and win through pain for many years, and we knew this was coming.
The road ahead looked long, but if there is one thing we've learned about Shad Mayfield, it's that betting against him is usually a mistake. At the time, 2027 felt realistic. For longevity, it made sense to get healthy, recover, and then chase another gold buckle in 2027.
Every time it felt like momentum was building, another obstacle appeared. Shad had the second surgery, and instead of moving the timeline forward, I found myself wondering if it might actually get pushed back. That is what made this next update so surprising.
Mayfield started talking about Calgary this year, not next year.
The Calgary Stampede became the target. It seemed ambitious, but that's never really been a problem for a guy nicknamed "Money Mayfield." Still, even then, it felt like a best-case scenario and something to work toward.
Now here we are, and it's not even halfway through June, and Shad Mayfield is back roping and tying, and he is entered in Reno. Reno is one of the big stops in the summer that can really get a guy going, and suddenly this comeback feels very real in 2026.
Shad joined Western Sports Roundup on Cowboy Channel + and talked about his comeback this year.
As Mayfield put it, "I am a competitor, so I am going to do whatever it takes. I am entered up as if I was healthy."
Mayfield isn't just any man returning from injury, either. He's one of the defining athletes of his generation. Shad is a 2-time World Champion, a 7-time NFR qualifier, and one of the best to play the game.
When healthy, Mayfield has been known to be unstoppable and nearly unbeatable. The craziest part of the comeback is that everything he has won the last couple of years has been through pain from the hip injury.
That's why nobody is looking at the standings right now and counting him out. Sure, he's unranked right now, but it is still early in the season. Rodeo knows that standings in June do not tell the whole story whatsoever.
Although the winter rodeos have historically been good to Shad, and are important factors in the year, the summer run has a ton of money up for grabs. The Fourth of July run alone can completely reshape the standings and the entire season. A cowboy can go from outside looking in to firmly in World Championship conversation in a matter of weeks.
If Mayfield is truly healthy by then, the rest of the field knows exactly what that means because healthy Shad Mayfield doesn't enter rodeos looking to do anything but win.
A lot of athletes returning from injury talk about easing back in and seeing how things feel. Mayfield's focus has always felt different. Every update has pointed toward one thing, and that is getting back to being himself and chasing gold buckles.
In the interview Shad continued, "Biggest thing is I have to get my confidence back and trust my body again."
The timeline for this comeback has moved from 2027 to Calgary and now to Reno in what feels like the blink of an eye. Reno begins June 19th, and Shad is entered and ready to roll. After that, he is entered in multiple a week just like a regular summer for Mayfield.
All summer long, Cowboy Channel + will be following Mayfieeld for "Shad," a new docuseries that is set to premiere this fall.
Now the question isn't whether Shad Mayfield is coming back, but how quickly he can climb back into the top 15. As we all know, though, Shad Money Mayfield typically moves pretty fast.
