Mohamed Salah move in doubt as Besiktas boss makes club's stance crystal clear

Besiktas have announced they have walked away from negotiations to sign Mohamed Salah despite holding multiple meetings with the former Liverpool star.

The Egyptian forward became a free agent after departing Anfield a year before his contract was due to expire and, now aged 34, is searching for a new club, with the Turkish team previously believing they were frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Salah had been the subject of interest from Besiktas, with club president Serdal Adali telling Turkish media they were awaiting a final decision. However, director Onder Ozen has since revealed that negotiations have hit a wall, with communications grinding to a halt, via The Mirror.

Ozen believes Salah's camp is currently in discussions with a rival club, but insists their final offer remains on the table should the Egyptian wish to pursue the move.

Ozen told Turkish media: "We contacted Salah, this also involved a financing model. Salah is a global star, a respected athlete. We met with Salah three times before the financial part of the negotiations was discussed.

"Up to this point, everything was smooth. When the financial side began, the initial smoothness slowed down from July 21st onwards. Requests began to arrive that would both disrupt the flow of information and create a deadlock in the financial process. I can assume that a respected athlete like Salah was unaware of this.

"The club has a policy, and it cannot deviate from that policy, our President has very clearly identified his position and has stayed there. I don't have a chance to say yes or no, Besiktas's offer, made under its own terms, is clear. If a response comes to this offer, it can be evaluated.

"But Besiktas will not make another offer. They said they are also in talks with another club, maybe they will get a result from there. The last offer we made to Salah is the final point that does not harm Besiktas's club identity."

Besiktas recently secured the signing of Leandro Trossard from Arsenal as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season. While remaining competitive, they have not captured the Turkish title since 2021, with Galatasaray currently the dominant force in the league.

Salah will not be short of suitors, having long been connected with a switch to Saudi Arabia, with Liverpool previously rejecting substantial offers, while the MLS also remains a viable option should the former Red wish to round out his playing career in the United States.
