Brooks Lee seems to be the answer at third base as Royce Lewis remains in Triple-A.
With the Minnesota Twins’ demotion of third baseman Royce Lewis earlier this month, there have been questions as to how the team will manage the left side of the infield.
That may have been solved over the last week, at least in the short term future. In his place, Brooks Lee has stood out as a big contributor at third for the Twins over the last handful of games. It was enough to impress manager Derek Shelton, who confirmed he will be the primary third baseman going forward.
The decision came shortly after the Twins stamped a sweep against the Boston Red Sox on the road, in which Lee was integral in each one of those wins. He recorded two multi-hit games, scored three runs and came up huge in Sunday’s win with a two-run RBI knock to put the Twins ahead for good.
After 45 starts at shortstop, Lee has started the last four games at third base, including Monday’s loss against the Chicago White Sox where he hit his sixth home run of the year in the first inning.
At the shortstop position, Lee’s glove has not been the strongest this year. With the move to third base, an opportunity opens up for him to improve in that facet with a change of scenery while Lewis aims to grow his confidence further in Triple-A.
With Lee at the hot corner, Ryan Kreidler and Orlando Arcia are anticipated to take on the bulk of the role at shortstop. Kreidler has impressed in his short stint in the bigs, while Arcia has raked in four games of action, hitting .500 in 14 at bats.
The 25-year-old has sneakily been a versatile piece for Shelton’s young team. Though he has struggled on the defensive end, Lee’s glove can be slotted throughout the infield, having manned down second base in the past as well. His speed and switch-hitting bat also has him coveted by Shelton.
Lee has shown some promising offensive flashes, while already surpassing his WAR total from last season. A once highly-regarded prospect, Lee has been integral in their recent stretch of success, notching a three-game extra-base hit streak for the second time this year with his homer on Monday.
With the Twins aiming to see some confidence growth in Lewis at the plate in his minor league stint, Lee’s recent contributions can be very intriguing for Shelton’s evaluations going forward. An answer in the short term, Lee figures to be an important piece for the young squad in early contention for a postseason spot in a weakened American League.
