The FSU Seminoles hit the field on Saturday for their ninth practice of the spring. Defensively, Florida State showed some improvement in their first year under defensive coordinator Tony White in 2025.

One area that they looked to improve in during the offseason is the linebacker room as Ernie Sims takes over the position. They added several transfers, and they're returning a number of guys as well.

Head coach Mike Norvell was at the podium after practice, and he talked about where the linebacker room is currently.

"I think our linebackers, I mean, you feel their explosiveness," Norvell said after the scrimmage. "We've been able to add some great competition in the room.

"You look at guys that have been here in Omar, Blake, A.J. Cottrell's doing some nice things. I mean, you see those guys are really flying around, especially with some of those freshmen. Karon Maycock had a couple of great plays. I think Noah Lavallee's done some really good things here in the first part of it. So I like what I'm seeing."

One of the key linebacker additions through the transfer portal was Chris Jones of Southern Miss, whom they flipped from Ole Miss in January. Norvell spoke about what he's done during the spring.

"Chris Jones was a little limited today, but he's done some really good things," said Norvell.

The same day the Jones committed, Mikai Gbayor also pledged after playing the 2025 season at North Carolina. He's a little banged up, but he's shown some positive things in the time he's been on the field.

"And then, you know, Mikai Gayor, he's out for the rest of the spring. Nothing that will affect him going into the fall," Norvell said. "We don't anticipate. But he's been a little limited, but he was impressive there. There in his first couple of weeks of spring ball, too."

Linebacker has been a rough spot for FSU for quite some time. Certainly, if they want to get where they need to be defensively in 2026, this group has to show up.
