Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel believes Justin Herbert can reach a new level in 2026.
At the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday, McDaniel made it clear that the expectation is for Herbert to reach new heights next season.
"I have high ambitions that meets him where he's at and for what he needs to do to take the next step in his career," McDaniel said.
Herbert is one of the top quarterbacks in the league, but hasn't gotten the attention he should for various reasons. In 2025, Herbert posted 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns with a 66.4 completion percentage. He also threw 13 interceptions.
One could argue Herbert hasn't had all the right pieces to have an MVP-caliber season, but that could certainly change next year.
"I look at a player that has shown he can do everything on a football field," McDaniel said. "Football is an 11-person game that there's a lot that coaches have to offer to help, assist a player. I feel very fortunate to coach a player of [his] skillset."
General manager Joe Hortiz raved about the hiring of McDaniel and how that should impact the Chargers offense going forward.
"I think the great thing about Mike is when he came in the first night he was in there, he was talking about he did things in Miami because that's who he had on the team," Hortiz said. "His adaptability and his creativity. That gets you fired up."
Hortiz expects some schematic changes to the unit, which means the Chargers will look to add more athletic offensive linemen and skill players this offseason.
The Chargers have revealed that the team will look to strengthen the offensive line, whether through the draft or free agency. LA has some financial flexibility heading into March, given its $87 million in cap space.
