EAST LANSING —Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is getting a salary increase.
The MSU Board of Trustees approved the raise for Izzo during their meeting on Friday, Dec. 12.
The terms of the updated contract have not yet been released, though a report from ESPN had Izzo receiving a $1 million raise. That would bring him to about $7.2 million per year, which would make him the highest paid basketball coach in the Big Ten.

Izzo has been the Spartan's men's basketball coach since 1995. He is the winningest coach in Big Ten history, currently holding a 745-303 record across his 31 seasons leading the program.
The motion for a raise was included within the personnel actions and information reports. The board also approved the hiring of Pat Fitzgerald as the new head football coach in the motion.
“Coach Izzo is one of the greatest coaches in the history of college athletics,” MSU athletic director J Batt said in a statement. “His list of championships and honors is amazing, but his true legacy will be the impact he’s had, first and foremost, on his student-athletes, as well as Spartans everywhere. He cares deeply about our University and our community, and is always willing to do whatever is asked of him to advance MSU.
“Despite his impressive collection of accolades, he continues pushing his Spartans to accomplish more. Since the summer we’ve been discussing how we elevate the program to even greater heights in our new landscape. This new contract not only celebrates his legacy, it displays the department’s commitment to doing all we can to support him and the program’s championship dreams for years to come.”
The Spartans have an 8-1 record this year and are ranked No. 9 in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches poll rankings, with their only loss to No. 3 Duke. MSU next plays Penn State at noon, Saturday, Dec. 12.
“I’m incredibly appreciative of the continued support from the Board of Trustees, President Guskiewicz and AD Batt,” Izzo said in a statement. “With strong leadership and positive momentum throughout the University and the department, the pieces are in place for sustained success, and I’m as energized as ever to chase championships. We’re going to keep working tirelessly to make all Spartans proud.”
