Michigan State football could lose a key veteran in its secondary.
Defensive back Dillon Tatum announced Monday morning on X, formerly Twitter, that he has entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining, a blow for the Spartanstwo days after they completed spring practice.
A four-star recruit in MSU’s 2022 class, Tatum suffered a lower-body injury in the 2024 season opener against Florida Atlantic. The 5-foot-11, 197-pound former West Bloomfield star chased down Owls running back Zuberi Mobley to the MSU sideline, receiving a 15-yard penalty for a horse-collar tackle as the two players tumbled out of bounds. Tatum finished the game with three tackles and sat out the rest of the year, taking a medical redshirt.
Tatum has experience at both safety spots, cornerback and nickelback and started nine games his first two seasons with the Spartans. He led MSU with seven pass-breakups and added 45 tackles in 2023.
Players who enter the transfer portal can return to their original. The spring portal window closes Friday.
