Michigan Basketball to face UConn in National Championship rematch

Mark your calendars. The Michigan Wolverines are officially scheduled to meet the UConn Huskies in a rematch of the National Championship on Nov. 6 at TD Garden in Boston. The game will undoubtedly be one of the most highly-anticipated non-conference matchups of the season and is a part of the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series.

“What an exciting opportunity to face coach Hurley and UConn again. It’s a game our fans will really look forward to,” Michigan head coach Dusty May said in a press release. “Anytime you get two programs like this together that early in the season, it’s going to be a great test and a great atmosphere. Playing in Boston should make it even more fun for our players and everyone traveling out to support us.”

The Wolverines defeated UConn, 69-63, clinching the second national championship in program history. Both teams are set to have a lot of new faces heading into the rematch, but Michigan will still be led by guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, who combined for 28 points and eight rebounds in the National Championship.

Michigan and UConn have played four total times, with the all-time series tied 2-2. The first-ever meeting between the two powerhouse programs took place in 2009 when top-ranked UConn outlasted the Wolverines, 69-61. Michigan enacted some revenge the following season with a 68-63 win in 2010. Five years later, UConn beat Michigan 74-60 in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

In addition to facing UConn in Boston, the Wolverines will have a loaded non-conference schedule next season. Michigan is set to host Marquette and travel to Villanova in November, and is reportedly scheduling a primetime battle with Duke at Madison Square Garden in December. May’s team will also compete in the Players Era Tournament from Nov. 24-28.
