CHICAGO − As expected, Michigan basketball (31-3, 19-1 Big Ten) is on the top line headed into March Madness.
The Wolverines were named a 1-seed for the NCAA Tournament when the selection committee released its bracket on Sunday, March 15.
Michigan will face the winner of the First Four game between UMBC and Howard as the 16-seed in the Midwest Region
The Wolverines will begin in Buffalo, New York, on Thursday, March 19, with a tipoff time to be determined.

The 2-seed in the region is Iowa State, the 3-seed in the region is Virginia, and Alabama is the 4-seed.
Should the Wolverines advance in the first round as expected, they'll play the winner of 8-seed Georgia and 9-seed Saint Louis in the Round of 32 before potentially advancing to the second weekend.
Making the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight would mean a return to the United Center in Chicago, where Michigan played Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament final on Sunday, March 15 and lost 80-72. The Final Four is at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Michigan missed the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23 and 2023-24, but when it has made the tournament over the past decade, its done well. The Wolverines have made it to the Sweet 16 or further in each of their past six appearances in the Big Dance, including last season when they knocked off UC San Diego and Texas A&M to make it to the second weekend.
Michigan has been one of the most dominant teams in the country in 2025-26, winning a program-record 29 games in the regular season, a Big Ten record 19 games in the league and becoming the first team to sweep its road games in the league since Bob Knight's perfect Indiana squad in 1975-76.
Dusty May's team is the favorite to win the national championship across most sportsbooks and now knows exactly how it will begin the most exhilarating three weeks of the entire year.
