The Miami Hurricanes featured one of the most productive rushing attacks in college football last season after the addition of Damien Martinez, a 1,000-yard running back in 2023 at Oregon State.
Earlier today, lighting struck twice when Miami gained a commitment from another 1,000-yard rusher as former North Dakota State running back CharMar Brown announced his intentions to transfer to the Hurricanes.
Brown won the Jerry Rice Award as the most outstanding freshman in the FCS eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark and is expected to bolster Miami's running back room that only returned 167 carries between presumed starter Mark Fletcher, and second-year running backs Jordan Lyle and Chris Wheatley-Humphrey.
After entering his name in the transfer portal two weeks ago, Brown visited the California Golden Bears and at one point was predicted to join Justin Wilcox's program. He would have had a clear path to start after Cal lost four running backs to the portal, but chose to play for Miami and run behind one of college football's top offensive lines.
“I just want to be developed at the highest level and showcase my talents,” said Brown.
Growing up 58 miles north of Lincoln, the Omaha, Nebraska native also drew interest from the hometown Cornhuskers and visited the campus last week prior to his April 21-22 visit to Miami.
In Brown, the Hurricanes gain a runner who is well-equipped to play the physical style of downhill football that Mario Cristobal wants his backs to run with. At 5-foot-11 and 214 pounds, Brown fits the inside zone, gap scheme Miami employs and is capable of breaking longer runs once he reaches the second level.
He is a powerful back who stays on his feet, displaying excellent contact balance, evidenced by his 758 yards after contact and 51 missed tackles forced.

On the season, the redshirt freshman totaled 1,181 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games, with season highs of 126 yards against Towson, three touchdowns on two occasions, and zero fumbles for the 2024 FCS Champions.
“I feel I can be that guy to punish the defense, also make stuff happen as well, get first downs,” Brown said. “That’s what really matters – keep the chains moving and make those big runs as well,” explained Brown on how he sees himself contributing to Miami's ground attack.
The Hurricanes were looking to improve the depth in the running back room by adding an experienced runner who could provide similar production to that of Jordan Lyle as a freshman in 2024. Lyle's 400 yards and five touchdowns came off of 54 carries.
Brown comes to Miami with three years of eligibility remaining.
