With the MLB trade deadline less than two weeks away, the New York Mets are one of the few clear sellers.

New York's season has been a disappointment, to say the least.

With one of the highest payrolls in the sport, the Mets have plummeted to the bottom of the National League standings.

While Francisco Lindor trade rumors have circled, the likelihood of a deal coming to fruition seems unlikely.

In terms of the starting rotation, the Mets have one obvious trade candidate: Freddy Peralta, an impending free agent. Extension talks between the two sides are virtually nonexistent.

The same can be said about two-time All-Star Clay Holmes, according to FanSided's Robert Murray.

"At this point, an extension between right-hander Clay Holmes and the New York Mets ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline appears unlikely, multiple major-league sources say," Murray wrote.

Holmes fractured his fibula in May and has been on the IL ever since. Before the injury, he posted a 2.39 ERA with a 55.3% ground ball rate.

A Holmes extension is still possible​

That performance followed a great 2025 season in Queens, his first since moving from the bullpen to the rotation.

"Things can change with one phone call, especially at this time of the year, so nothing can be totally ruled out," Murray added. "But Holmes is expected to draw significant trade interest in the coming days as he’s getting closer to returning from a fractured fibula that’s sidelined him since mid-May."

An extension with Holmes makes sense for the Mets if the two sides can reach an agreement.

Chances are, New York's front office already has its sights set on returning to contention in 2027.

At the very least, locking Holmes up long-term would help with the expected departure of Peralta.
