The New York Mets seem to be enjoying the early results of a major offseason overhaul.

The team has captured a winning record and won two of their first three series as they head into a rubber match against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Considering how many of their star players are now making significant adjustments to their new home, there’s reason to celebrate that early success.

But after parting ways with long-time stars like Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo, the team unexpectedly lost a key member of the team that they hoped to keep.

“Originally hopeful that Juan Soto could avoid a stint on the injured list, the Mets on Monday took the more cautious route, placing Soto on the 10-day IL with a right calf strain,” Anthony DiComo reported for MLB.com. “While the move is retroactive to Saturday, the Mets announced that a typical timetable to return from his severity of strain is two to three weeks, meaning Soto will likely spend more than the minimum amount of time on the IL.”

New York Mets Make Tommy Pham Roster Move As Juan Soto Injury Calls For Outfield Depth

In the immediate aftermath of Soto’s departure, the Mets called up Ronny Mauricio, who can play a variety of positions. But with Soto sidelined and top prospect Carson Benge struggling, the team’s outfield depth is looking a little thin. And that could lead the team to promote a veteran it signed late in the offseason.

The team signed 12-year MLB veteran Tommy Pham to a minor-league deal late last month, reuniting with a player who logged 62 hits for the Mets in the 2023 campaign. The deal appeared to be an effort to increase the team’s depth and, now that the depth is being tested, the Mets have made a roster move with Pham.

On Wednesday, the Mets moved Pham from their Triple-A affiliate Syracuse Mets to their Single-A affiliate St. Lucie Mets, according to the official transactions log.

MLB Pipeline’s Sam Dykstra confirmed the move, noting that the Mets added veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel to the St. Lucie Mets’ roster as well.

New York Mets Move 12-Year Veteran Tommy Pham To Single-A Affiliate

Though a move from Triple-A to Single-A marks a demotion, it could be a step toward getting Pham some game action as he looks to make a major-league comeback. With Soto likely facing an extended stint on the injured list, the team could be just one more outfield loss away from supplementing their big-league roster with a move.

Pham might not be a one-for-one replacement for a player like Soto, but after so many years in the big leagues, he does carry some positives as a potential substitute.

“Pham also brings significant postseason experience to the table, and he’s been successful during the playoffs,” Manny Randhawa noted for MLB.com. “In 37 career postseason games, he has a .315/.331/.492 slash line with six homers. His most recent playoff series was with the (Kansas City) Royals in the 2024 American League Division Series, in which he hit .455 (5-for-11) against the (New York) Yankees.”
