Argentina has reached the World Cup final for the second straight time, where it will battle Spain on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
To reach Sunday’s final, Argentina came from behind once again, this time stunning England, 2-1, in Wednesday’s semifinal in Atlanta.
The last time it reached this stage, Lionel Messi snagged his long-awaited first World Cup title when Argentina defeated France in penalties in 2022.
Now, they’ll look to make it two in a row.
Here are three things to know about Argentina before Sunday’s final:
The Golden Boot race has been absolutely spectacular to follow across this tournament. Messi entered Wednesday’s semifinal against England with eight goals, tied for the most with France’s Kylian Mbappé. Norway’s Erling Haaland, as well as England’s Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane sat not far behind.
Messi is in prime position to claim the Golden Boot for the first time in his career. He can solidify it with another goal in the final, though that might be hard against a Spain defense that’s allowed just one score across the entire tournament.
Messi has scored a goal in all but TK of Argentina’s seven matches thus far, including a hat trick versus Algeria and brace against Austria in the group stage.
Argentina’s knockout round matches haven’t exactly been easy. It squeaked past Cape Verde in extra time in the Round of 32, then erased a 2-0 deficit late versus Egypt the following round. And it needed extra time once again and a red card to defeat Switzerland, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.
But every time, Argentina has found a way. And that proved to be the case again versus England when it TKTK RESULT.
Maybe it’s finally due for disappointment against Spain. Or maybe it’s a sign of resilience it will need to come out on top again. Sunday’s final will determine whether that’s the case.
No team has claimed back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, one of just two teams to date to do so (Italy, 1934 and 1938).
Argentina is now just one win away from being just the third team to accomplish that feat after winning it all in 2022. That final in Qatar was one of the best ever — featuring a France comeback, Mbappé hat trick and Argentina’s eventual win in penalty kicks.
It’ll be near impossible for this final to live up to those fireworks, but history will be on the line no matter what.
