New York Yankees ace Max Fried is set to return next week after more than two months on the shelf, manager Aaron Boone told the "Talkin' Yanks" podcast.
Fried made a rehab start for the Yankees' Triple-A team on Friday, July 17, giving up two runs and five hits in three innings on 52 pitches. The left-hander is scheduled to throw about 60 pitches in his second rehab outing on Wednesday, July 22, Boone said.
The 32-year-old landed on the injured list on May 16 with a bone bruise in his pitching elbow.
Boone said Fried will make his big-league return during the team's series in Chicago, which begins on Monday, July 27.
Fried is in the second season of an eight-year, $218 million free agent contract he signed with the Yankees prior to the 2025 season after eight years with the Atlanta Braves. Fried went 19-5 with a 2.86 ERA in 32 starts in his first year with the Yankees, earning his third All-Star nod and finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting.
New York trails the Tampa Bay Rays by 1 ½ games in the AL East standings entering Tuesday and the Yankees remain without slugger Aaron Judge and starter Carlos Rodon due to injury.
Judge, the three-time MVP, has been out since early June and the team still doesn't have a recovery timeline.
