A familiar last name with a lengthy SEC head-coaching record is joining Texas football, according to reports.

Mark Stoops — brother of former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops — will reportedly work under Steve Sarkisian as a special assistant with the Longhorns this upcoming season. The American-Statesman reached out to Texas athletics about the alleged move but did not receive a confirmation. Sarkisian's team is about a week from kicking off spring practice.

Stoops, 58, is not only the younger sibling to a man who had a winning record with the rival Sooners against Texas over 18 seasons, he himself is the all-time winningest coach in Kentucky history. Mark Stoops was 82-80 with Wildcats football for 13 seasons, ending last year. Before he was fired, he was the longest tenured head coach in the conference. The former defensive coordinator had a winning record seven times in Lexington, Ky.

Texas football will have its spring game April 18 after starting practices Monday. The Longhorns, who went 10-3 last season, did not have a spring game in 2025. Stoops joined a veteran-laden staff that includes former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, the team's newly hired defensive coordinator.
