Mariners' hitting problems aren't just with Cal Raleigh originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Seattle Mariners aren't hitting.
Sure, they weren't helped the other night by Jo Adell robbing three potential home runs of theirs. But that's not the whole story of the season.
The story, noted by analyst Mike Petriello on X, is that the Mariners' bat speed is down.
And with the bat speed has come a decline of more than eight percentage points in hard hit rate, shown in the chart below:
I saw someone note that most of the Mariners had slower bat speeds and wondering if that was tracking data weirdness and hey, always possible, but when the hard-hit rate has collapsed by this much too ... the bats might just be slower.https://t.co/oV0qe1BMyVpic.twitter.com/etPdEA2AT9

Cal Raleigh has been the most discussed issue, having taken 11 games to reach his first home run of the season as his swing looked out of whack for the first week and a half of the campaign.
This is far from just a Raleigh problem, though.
Josh Naylor is batting .114.
Julio Rodriguez is batting .143.
At least Naylor's underlying metrics show he's been one of the unluckiest hitters in baseball. Rodriguez is simply just in a funk right now.
But when both of those guys aren't hitting, it's not going to be good for Seattle's offense.
Raleigh finally hit his first homer of the season on Monday night, but that was it, and Seattle lost 2-1.
Until this offense comes around, maybe by figuring out how to speed those bats up, things could be a bit rough for the Mariners.
