May 17—MORGANTOWN — There's a saying in sports that it's difficult to beat one team three times in a season. Don't tell that to MHS starting pitcher Maddox Boggs, who led his club to a 3-0 victory over University on Friday evening in his third start against the Mohigans' crosstown rival this season.

The latest, a three-hit shutout that sent the Mohigans into the Class AAAA Region I championship series, was his best start against UHS, as Boggs tossed a complete game in 81 pitches with a walk and three strikeouts.

Boggs is now 7-2 on the season with a 1.40 earned-run-average and 35 strikeouts.

MHS will meet top-seeded Wheeling Park in the best-of-three championship series with the winner claiming the rights to represent Region I in the state tournament in Charleston.

"From the minute our guys showed up at the ballpark today, you could sense a high level of focus, " MHS head coach Pat Sherald said. "Really impressed with this group and how they get down to business. You never have to look over your shoulder at any point ; these guys are always working and ready to go. Of course, anytime you get an outing like the one from Maddox Boggs today, you'll have the opportunity to win the ball game."

Boggs gave up a single to Barrett Shuba to open the game, but ended the top of the first inning throwing only five pitches, as the MHS defense turned a double play and caught a fly ball in the infield.

MHS got things going in the bottom half as Weston Mazey hit a dribbler in the infield but advanced around to third base on a throwing error. Mason Bowers sacrificed Mazey home to open the scoring one batter later.

Boggs continued his strong start through the second and third innings without allowing another hit, and the MHS offense added to the lead in the bottom of the third when Bowers singled home Bean Nipper from third to extend the lead to 2-0.

In two games this week, the MHS starting pitchers, Vinnie Aloi (Wednesday) and Boggs (Friday), kept their pitch counts low but their strike percentages high. Aloi threw 69 pitches in seven innings on Wednesday, with 71 % of his pitches coming for strikes. Boggs tossed 81 pitches on Friday, with 61 % of them being strikes. In his nine starts this season, Boggs has thrown over 60 % of his pitches for strikes in all but one.

"I know my defense is going to be behind me, ready to make plays, " Boggs said. "I'm not too worried about making someone swing and miss, but I let them put the ball in play today. It's always better to pitch with a lead, and getting that early lead helped. We know what we have on this team and what we can do. I think we have a chance to make a run if we keep working hard."

The Mohigans added their third run in the bottom of the sixth as Eli Boggs brought Koa Silvers home to score.

"Winning isn't easy, so when you go out and have a chance to beat your rival, there's a lot of emotion, " Sherald said. "We have a week to get to work before another tough opponent. We will have the weekend off before hitting the ground running on Monday to get back to work."

The Class AAAA Region I championship series will begin the week of May 26. The higher-seeded team (Wheeling Park) will host Game 1 and Game 3 (if necessary).
