Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones revealed the real reason he signed with the San Francisco 49ers in a recent appearance on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast.
Jones, who was selected by the Patriots with the No. 15 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, was initially a player that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan showed interest in drafting. However, the 49ers instead decided to use the No. 3 overall pick on former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.
The Lance pick didn't go the way the team expected, and Shanahan cashed in on a full-circle moment to sign Jones after he spent a year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where the Patriots traded him.
“Trust me, I didn’t have a crazy amount of options, to be honest. I played in Jacksonville, and there was good tape, but it wasn’t consistent," Jones admitted. "We talked about, people didn’t really know, but Kyle was like, 'He knows football.' He was like, ‘This kid got screwed or whatever you want to call it, and it just didn’t work out. And I can get this kid back on track.’ I feel like he really saw that. And honestly, we did, and now I’m going to keep doing that. But I really appreciate it because Kyle, it’s always been me and Kyle. I feel like that was supposed to happen.”
Shanahan’s gamble on Jones paid off in 2025.
Brock Purdy missed extended time with an injury, and Jones stepped up. He threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. The former first-round pick was able to show off some of the same playmaking abilities that he showed throughout his college tenure at the University of Alabama and in his rookie season with the Patriots.
He looks much happier, and his confidence is back. Perhaps he really is where he was supposed to be all along.
