Lukas Podolski is perhaps one of the most iconic names to ever wear the Germany kit. The 2014 World Cup winner had an illustrous time with Die Mannschaft and earned 130 caps with 49 goals in that time. The cult hero recently chimed in on his thoughts about Lennart Karl playing for Germany at such a young age.
“He brings a lot to the table, is carefree, has a playful wit. I’m always of the opinion that it should be based on performance – no matter if someone’s 17, 18 or 25. It should also be based on character: Does he fit into the team? In that case, age doesn’t matter,” said Podolski as per Maximilian Koch.
Podolski comments’ are bang on with the current narrative surrounding the wonderkid. Is Karl extremely young to be playing such a large role with Bayern Munich and Germany? Yes. Is he performing at the level required? Also yes.
While there are some critics with older ways of thinking, Karl seemed up to the challenge at playing with the senior team across both March friendlies under Julian Nagelsmann. While he didn’t find the back of the net in his brief appearances, Karl is an absolute X-factor for both club and country, and can play a larger role heading into the World Cup.
While some aren’t as keen to see Karl playing with the senior team at his age, it is refreshing to see a national legend giving praise to the young Bayern Munich attacker.
