LSU football held its Pro Day on Monday afternoon, giving several former Tigers the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities and talent to NFL scouts and executives in attendance. While the NFL Combine is the better-known event for this purpose, LSU’s Pro Day offered some Tigers who did not receive invites to the combine a chance to demonstrate their abilities.

Harold Perkins Jr., who did attend the combine but decided not to test there, had a fantastic outing. At 6-0 5/8 and 220 pounds, Perkins ran a 4.40 40-yard dash, which would have ranked first among linebackers at the combine. His broad jump, which came in at 10’4”, would have tied for the fourth-best mark.

The rest of his workout was less exemplary, however. Perkins’ 35-inch vertical jump would have ranked second-lowest at his position at the combine, and his 20 reps on the bench press would have been the fewest.

In all fairness, these numbers are actually quite solid on a historical level. Over the past few years, prospects have been advised not to test in events where they’re not expected to put up top-notch numbers, which is why only 15 of the 29 linebackers who attended the combine did the vertical jump, and only four did the bench. This development makes Perkins' numbers seem less impressive than they really are.

All in all, Perkins had a good day, but it’s hard to estimate how much his performance benefited him in the long term. He never quite got things figured out when he moved to a primarily off-ball role under Blake Baker at LSU, still struggling to figure out where to be and when to be there even in his final season with the program. Perkins’ traits are worth betting on with the right team, but he’ll likely need some real development to establish a solid role at the next level.
