Liverpool cruise into the FA Cup quarter-finals after getting revenge on Wolves
Liverpool made no mistake at Molineux this time with two goals in many minutes setting up the Merseyside team for the next round of the FA Cup.
The Reds were keen not to have a repeat of Tuesday's late defeat in the Premier League and this time always looked in control. For the first 45 minutes, Wolves were barely able to get out their own half with Rio Ngumoha in particular proving a handful for the backline.
Rob Edwards' side did show some faint ambition early in the second half and were immediately punished for it. Liverpool broke with Curtis Jones eventually teeing up the ball for Andy Robertson to find the far corner beyond the reach of Sam Johnstone.
Then almost immediately after the ball was in the net again. Initially, Mohamed Salah had been judged to have been offside when he received Robertson's ball for an easy finish at the far post. However, VAR intervened with the Egyptian just being played onside.
Liverpool wrapped up their progression to the quarter-finals in the 74th minute after Jones linked up with Ryan Gravenberch before lashing his effort into the corner to make it 3-0.
Wolves had looked unlikely to get back into the game but they did get a consolation goal which was about as route one as it gets. Johnstone made a routine save after a shot from Florian Wirtz on the edge of the area before launching the ball up field where substitute Hwang Hee-chan won the race to get it before finishing past Alisson Becker.
Despite that late goal, Arne Slot's side can now look forward to a Champions League double-header with Galatasaray with a visit from struggling Tottenham Hotspur in the league coming up next. Wolves meanwhile host Brentford in 10 days time as they hope to continue their faint hopes of survival.
