The Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears are quickly becoming one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries again, but heading into the 2026 season, Detroit looks poised to remind the NFC North exactly who still runs the division. With two massive matchups on the schedule — including another nationally televised Thanksgiving showdown at Ford Field — the Lions have every opportunity to sweep the Bears and send a message to former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in the process.

The storylines are already writing themselves. Johnson spent years helping build Detroit’s explosive offense under head coach Dan Campbell before leaving for Chicago. While Bears fans viewed his hiring as the move that could finally elevate the franchise back into contention, Detroit already proved last season that familiarity does not guarantee success. The Lions went 2-0 against Chicago in 2025, including a dominant 52-21 win at Ford Field, and they now enter 2026 with one of the most complete rosters in football.

Detroit’s offense remains the biggest reason the Lions should control both matchups. Quarterback Jared Goff continues to thrive in Campbell’s aggressive system, and he still has arguably the NFL’s best supporting cast around him. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco form one of football’s toughest backfields, while Amon-Ra St. Brown remains nearly impossible to slow down underneath. Tight end Sam LaPorta gives Detroit another matchup nightmare, especially against a Chicago defense that still struggled with tight ends throughout stretches of last season.

The Lions also appear significantly more battle-tested than the Bears. Chicago may have talent with quarterback Caleb Williams and an improving young core, but Detroit’s experience in big games gives them a major edge. Campbell has built a team that thrives in physical divisional matchups, and the Lions’ offensive line continues to overwhelm opponents at the point of attack. That becomes especially important late in the season when NFC North football turns into a grind.

The Thanksgiving matchup could become one of the defining games of the entire division race. Detroit will host Chicago at Ford Field on Nov. 26 in the annual Thanksgiving Day Classic, once again placing the Lions in front of a national audience.

The matchup carries even more drama because of Johnson’s return to Detroit. Ford Field is expected to be electric, and Lions fans would love nothing more than to spoil Johnson’s holiday while strengthening Detroit’s grip on the NFC North. The Bears may enter the game with playoff expectations, but the Lions have the superior roster, more continuity, and the advantage of playing at home on a short week.

Detroit’s defense should also be improved enough to make life difficult for Williams. Edge rushers like Aidan Hutchinson and veteran additions along the defensive front can consistently pressure Chicago’s offensive line, while the Lions secondary continues developing into one of the more aggressive units in the conference. If Detroit can force Williams into obvious passing situations, the Lions’ pass rush could completely take over both games.

The second meeting later in the season at Soldier Field could carry major playoff implications, but that may actually favor Detroit even more. Campbell’s teams have embraced pressure moments over the last several years, and the Lions now have the maturity and leadership to win difficult road divisional games in cold-weather environments.

Chicago will undoubtedly improve under Johnson, but there is still a difference between becoming competitive and dethroning Detroit. The Lions remain deeper, tougher, and more proven in the biggest moments. With Campbell leading one of the NFL’s most physical rosters and Goff still operating an elite offense, Detroit has a real chance to sweep the Bears again in 2026.

And if the Lions do it on Thanksgiving in front of the entire country, it would make the statement even sweeter.
