Following Sione Vaki’s broken nose and poked eye, which Dan Campbell said will keep Vaki “out for a little bit,” the Detroit Lions signed veteran running back Raheem Blackshear on Tuesday, according to the league’s transaction wire.
To make space on their roster, the Lions waived receiver Lawrence Keys with an injury designation. Keys left Monday’s practice with a hamstring injury.
Blackshear, 28, attended Rutgers (2017-19) and Virginia Tech (2020-21) before signing with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Blackshear went on to later join the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 203 yards and three touchdowns on 52 attempts from 2022-24. He had brief stops with the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, and he closed the campaign on the practice squad with the New York Jets.
In addition to Blackshear, the Lions had three other running backs in for a tryout, in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Hassan Haskins and Kylin James. Edwards-Helaire was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round in 2020.
With Vaki out and Jahmyr Gibbs holding in for an extension, the Lions were short handed at running back, with Isiah Pacheco, Jacob Saylors, Jabari Small and Kye Robichaux the only other options on the roster. Saylors and Small drew recognition from Lions coach Dan Campbell on Tuesday when he was discussing who could step up in Vaki’s place and potentially earn a role during training camp.
