The date has been set. Now, New Mexico United and Birmingham Legion FC will see if there will finally be a match.

The USL Championship announced Thursday the clubs’ makeup game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in Alabama. The match is still set to be held at Dunnavant Valley Fields — a 50-acre public sports complex — in Shelby County, Alabama, outside Birmingham.

Legion usually plays its home matches at Protective Stadium, a 47,000-seat turfed facility best known for hosting UAB home football games and the Alabama high school state football championships, in Birmingham. It was moved to Dunnavant Valley the first time to accommodate a concert at the stadium.

The clubs were initially scheduled to play July 24, but it was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. The storms, however, remained long enough that the intended field’s playing surface became waterlogged and the match was postponed again.

The new date will make for a busy stretch for United with the regular season entering its final two months.

New Mexico will host Indy Eleven on Sept. 11 and then travel to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Sept. 19.

United (8-4-3) plays at Monterey Bay FC (4-12-3) at 8 p.m. Saturday. New Mexico is currently fourth in the 12-club Western Conference table with 27 points, while Monterey Bay is last with 15.
