The Detroit Tigers may be preparing to make the hardest argument any front office can ask its fans to accept.
According to Bob Nightengale, rival executives believe Detroit will trade ace Tarik Skubal while still attempting to convince supporters that the organization has not abandoned the 2026 season.
Good luck selling that one.
Skubal is not just another veteran who could bring back prospects at the deadline. He is Detroit’s best pitcher, one of the most dominant starters in baseball and the player most capable of carrying the Tigers through a postseason race.
Moving him would weaken the rotation immediately. It would also force the clubhouse, fan base and remaining roster to accept a difficult contradiction.
How can a team claim it still intends to compete after removing its biggest advantage?
The Tigers could point to a massive prospect return, payroll flexibility or a broader long-term plan. Those explanations might make sense inside a baseball operations meeting. They would be much harder to defend to fans watching a playoff opportunity slip away.
Tigers fans have remained patient through years of rebuilding, roster turnover and promises about sustainable success.
This season was supposed to be about taking another step, not resetting the timeline again.
A Skubal trade might eventually produce valuable players. It could even look smart several years from now. None of that changes what it would mean today.
Detroit would be choosing tomorrow over its best chance to win now.
President of baseball operations Scott Harris would need an overwhelming return to justify trading Skubal. Even then, the deal would define his tenure in Detroit.
Anything less than a franchise-altering package would be viewed as a failure.
The Tigers can describe such a move as strategic rather than surrender. Fans are smart enough to understand the difference between roster management and waving a white flag.
If rival executives are correct and the Tigers trade Tarik Skubal, Detroit can still claim it has not given up on the season.
That does not mean anyone has to believe it.
