The Arizona Cardinals are finally honoring Larry Fitzgerald. Now that he has been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he will be immortalized at State Farm Stadium.
He will be added to the Ring of Honor, and he will have his No. 11 retired.
It will happen in Week 7 at halftime of the Cardinals' game against the Denver Broncos, part of Legends Weekend.
He will be the 20th member of the Ring of Honor, and he will be only the sixth player to have his number retired. The over five are:
In a statement, owner Michael Bidwill had this to say about Fitzgerald and the decision to retire his number and add him to the Ring of Honor.
“No one who has ever worn a Cardinals uniform is more deserving of this honor,” Bidwill said. “His excellence on the field was only surpassed by the way he represented our team and our community off of it. We are all grateful for the opportunity to recognize Larry in this way and for our fans to celebrate all he has meant to our franchise and the state of Arizona.”
The Ring of Honor induction was a no-brainer. Retiring his number is not something the Cardinals take lightly.
However, He was a career Cardinal, playing 17 years in the NFL, only for the Cardinals. He was one of the greatest on the field, he was special off the field and he nearly won them a Super Bowl.
It could have happened long ago, but he wanted to wait until after the Hall of Fame.
Fans who have longed to be able to send him off into retirement but never could because he refused to say he was actually retiring from pro football will now get to do it. Halftime against the Broncos might be the loudest halftime Cardinals fans will have ever seen.
