A Detroit Red Wings goaltender was traded on Friday. But he’s not going anywhere.
For now.
In Russia’s KHL, Friday saw veteran forward Joseph Blandisi traded by SKA St. Petersburg to Salavat Yulaev. In return, SKA St. Petersburg acquired the KHL rights to Red Wings goaltender Daniil Tarasov.
SKA St. Petersburg is coached by former Red Wings Russian Five icon and Hockey Hall of Famer Igor Larionov.
The Red Wings signed Tarasov as an unrestricted free agent this summer. He agreed to terms on a one-year deal with an AAV of $2 million.
Tarasov, 27, spent last season with the Florida Panthers. In 31 appearances, he went 13-15-3 with a 3.05 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.
He spent the previous four NHL campaigns with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In his five NHL seasons, Tarasov hasn’t posted a GAA under 3.00 since his 2021-22 rookie year (2.40). Only once in the past four seasons has his save percentage finished north of .900. Tarasov’s career NHL numbers show a 3.30 GAA and .897 save percentage.
What all those numbers add up to is a very tenuous NHL existence for the netminder. And history shows us that if Russian players aren’t in the NHL, they’d rather be in the KHL than the AHL.
Red Wings Have NHL Goalie Prospects on the Horizon
Certainly, that’s what Larionov must be thinking. If Tarasov is underwhelming in his Detroit debut season, it’s unlikely that he’ll get another pact from the Red Wings. With prospects Michal Postava and Trey Augustine hovering over the horizon, Tarasov’s long-term future is probably going to play out elsewhere.
Maybe as SKA St. Petersburg’s goalie as early as next season.
Blandisi, 32, has played for SKA since 2025. In the 2025/26 season, the Canadian played 62 games in the KHL Championship and scored 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists). He also scored two goals in four games in the Gagarin Cup. It was his first KHL season.
Blandisi was an NHLer for 101 games from 2015-20 with the New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
