The Los Angeles Lakers will have some work to do this offseason when it comes to building a truly championship-caliber roster around Luka Doncic. LeBron James could leave, and they have to re-sign Austin Reaves, who is expected to opt out of his contract this summer, to a contract that will pay him roughly what he's worth without suffocating the team's overall payroll.
Whether James stays or goes, the Lakers need a couple of legitimate athletic two-way players at the forward and guard positions in order to take the next step. One player they reportedly had on their wish list prior to the trade deadline was Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans. According to Evan Sidery, the Lakers will make another attempt to land Murphy this summer.
Murphy, a 6-foot-8 forward, was the No. 17 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and can play both the 3 and 4 positions. He's averaging 22.1 points on 47.6% overall shooting and 37.8% from 3-point range, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals a game this season for a Pelicans team that has a 15-41 record right now.
He has three seasons left on his contract after this one and will make $27 million next season. He won't exactly be inexpensive for the Lakers to acquire, but if the price is reasonable, he may be worth every bit of it.

After inquiring multiple times before the deadline, the Lakers and Warriors plan to once again pursue Trey Murphy III as a top trade target this summer.
