Lakers reportedly want to re-sign $11M gamble, perfect floor spacer for Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers are poised for a big summer, with plenty of cap space and valuable assets to offer. The trade deadline was uncertain for the Lakers, as they didn’t want to overspend, but they did make one notable move, shipping off Gabe Vincent.
“The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired guard Luke Kennard from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for guard Gabe Vincent and a 2032 second-round pick, the team announced on Thursday night,” ESPN wrote.
Luka Doncic has enjoyed playing alongside Luke Kennard, and the stats back it up. The two create excellent spacing on the court, opening up the offense for the entire team.
“During the last six games, the pair have played 88 minutes together. During that time, Doncic and Kennard have posted an offensive rating of 125.7 on the court. That is the fourth most of any duo who have shared the hardwood for at least 50 minutes. What is doubly notable about that is the three two-man combinations above them too. Each of those features one of either Doncic or Kennard. Between Luka and Luke, there has to be some sort of nickname in there for this new dynamic duo in Los Angeles. If they keep performing like they have thus far, it will be owed to them,” Lake Show Life’s Svyatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.
Kennard has made such an impressive impact on the Lakers that the team wants to re-sign him this summer.
“The Los Angeles Lakers have strong interest in re-signing Luke Kennard this offseason, sources told Lakers Daily,” Lakers Daily’s Ashish Mathur wrote.
The Lakers have benefited greatly from having Kennard come off the bench, and it seems they see him as part of the team’s immediate future. Los Angeles is building a winning roster for the long term, and they believe Kennard is a key piece.
With some major summer decisions on the horizon, the organization appears to be zeroing in on its options. Kennard is one of the best shooters in the NBA, making this a huge development for the Lakers.
