The Los Angeles Lakers are renouncing the free agent rights to a notable frontcourt contributor.
Per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Lakers are officially parting ways with a 6-foot-10 NBA champion forward who was part of the historic Luka Doncic-Dallas Mavericks trade in 2025.
“The Los Angeles Lakers have officially renounced the free agent rights to LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Dion Waiters, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, Maxi Kleber, Nick Smith Jr, Jared Dudley, Avery Bradley, Jaxson Hayes, Markieff Morris, and Wayne Ellington,” Scotto reported Wednesday.
For clarity, on Feb. 2 2025, the Mavericks traded Doncic, Morris, and Maxi Kleber to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz were also included in the deal, landing Jalen Hood-Schifino, the Los Angeles Clippers’ 2025 second-round pick, and the Mavericks’ 2025 second-round pick.
Before being included in arguably the most lopsided trade of all time, Morris won a championship with the Lakers in 2019-20 as a 14.2-minute, 5.3-point-per-game contributor (he also shot 40.6% from the field and 33.3% from three-point land in 14 contests).
The Kansas product spent the following season with Los Angeles before competing with the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, and Mavericks. Of course, Morris reunited with the Lakers in 2025 in an unexpected fashion, but he only lasted eight games with the franchise before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
If Morris’ NBA career is indeed finished (he didn’t play in 2025-26), the former first-round pick should be proud that he stuck around the league for over a decade and has a title on his resume.
