Well,
Mel Kiper Jr has officially said to ignore the 40 times and take Suggs. Of course last week he said the Cardinals had to take Leftwich...
April 22 | DRAFT NOTEBOOK
If Cincinnati takes Carson Palmer as expected, it looks like the top five could settle in nicely. Palmer to the Bengals, Charles Rogers to Detroit, Andre Johnson to Houston, Dewayne Robertson to Chicago and Terence Newman to Dallas.
The bottom line on Terrell Suggs: he got it done on the field.
That makes Terrell Suggs the most interesting guy early in the draft. If Arizona trades down and doesn't take Suggs, he becomes a major bargain for whichever team decides to select him.
And the thing to remember about Suggs is that he did have 24 sacks last year. He played an explosive game, looked fast and finished plays on film, yet ran a 4.85 40-yard dash during his workout.
His situation is reminiscent of Darren Howard's coming out of Kansas State in 2000. Howard was projected to be a mid-first round pick but dropped into the early second because he ran 5.03 in the 40, but he ended up having 11 sacks his first year and was one of the top rookies at any position.
The point is, you can't worry about 40 times because a defensive end isn't running 40 yards to get to the quarterback. Explosiveness, instincts and technique with the pads on are what matter. Suggs is going to be sort of a test case this year as to whether 40 times or production are more important to NFL teams, but I still feel he belongs in that No. 6 spot.
Hopefully Kiper is more right about Suggs than Wadsworth...who was Kiper's Most Likely to Succeed in the NFL pick
