Friday night's Freeway Series opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels was a great pitching duel between Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki and Angels starter Reid Detmers.

Both the Angels and Dodgers really didn't put together too much offense as the teams totaled six total hits. The Dodgers had three hits, and the Angels also had three hits.

But that third hit from the Dodgers proved pivotal. It won the game for the Dodgers as Freddie Freeman stepped up to the plate and smashed a solo home run. Freeman's home run came off Angels reliever Kirby Yates.

Freeman rounded the bases and received a hero's welcome at home plate. The final score? Dodgers 1, Angels 0 at Dodger Stadium.

Sasaki Had Outstanding Start

Sasaki was outstanding for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. He went seven innings, allowed just two hits, walked two, and struck out 10. Detmers worked six innings, gave up two hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Blake Treinen worked one-third of an inning in the ninth, eventually getting the victory and upping his season record to 3-1. Yates absorbed the loss, falling to 0-2 this season.

With the one-run victory, the Dodgers are now 41-23 and remain in first place in the National League West Division. As for the Angels, they secured their spot in last place in the American League West Division and fall to 24-40. Sasaki's stellar outing earned high praise from Roberts after the game.

"I think that we're getting to the point where he's earning a lot more leash," Roberts said, according to MLB.com Dodgers reporter Sonja Chen, "and rightfully so."

Splitter Has Helped His Pitching

Sasaki, with his outing on Friday night, became the fourth-youngest Japanese-born pitcher to reach double-digit strikeouts in a Major League game. Shohei Ohtani (who else!) has the top two spots in the category. He achieved the mark twice, when he was 23 years, 277 days old, and when he was 23 years, 312 days in 2018.

Sasaki has added a splitter to his pitching arsenal and, well, it has been a major difference in his outings. Since adding it on April 25, Sasaki posted a 3.12 ERA. He's only allowed 14 earned runs in 40.1 innings over seven starts.

If he can keep outings like the one on Friday night together, then the Dodgers' pitching staff gets more support for the rest of this season.

The Dodgers and Angels go at it again on Saturday as the Freeway Series continues at Dodger Stadium. While the Angels could definitely use a series victory over their crosstown rivals, don't think that the Dodgers can't finish off a series sweep on Sunday afternoon.

They want to keep stacking up wins, leading them (hopefully) into another postseason run. After all, a third World Series championship in three straight seasons isn't too far away.
