England’s World Cup win at the Azteca against Mexico will go down as one of the nation’s greatest-ever victories.

It was Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane who got their names on the scoresheet, but every player out on the pitch was a hero in Thomas Tuchel’s eyes.

As some of the nation braved the early hours kick-off time, and some found out the score when they woke up, the prime minister, Kier Starmer, shared his reaction to the result.

The outgoing PM was also joined by his expected successor, Andy Burnham, in congratulating the Three Lions after what was a stunning performance.

As the battle for Number 10, Downing Street begins to heat up, the pair can at least agree on just how well Tuchel’s team played at the Azteca.

United States President Donald Trump has been criticised for influencing FIFA as they overturned Folarin Balogun’s red card.

England could potentially do with some influence from their prime minister after Jarell Quansah was sent off against Mexico, which makes him ineligible to play against Norway at the weekend.

“One of the greatest England matches I’ve ever seen. We are through to the quarter finals!” said Starmer on X.

His potential successor, Burnham, also wanted to congratulate England, but also shed some light on Jordan Pickford’s heroics.

“Epic from England and Everton’s No1,” Burnham said on X.

The 56-year-old is a big-time Everton supporter and will have been absolutely delighted to see Pickford perform to the level he did against Mexico.

It will certainly be a tough test for the England number one on Saturday when he faces the in-form Norway striker.

Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway against Brazil as he took his tally up to seven for this summer’s World Cup.
