Kevin Gausman was absolutely on the list of pitchers available at the trade deadline despite having a down year by the starting hurler's standards, but with the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East cellar, it was almost certain he'd be dealt by Monday.
And he was. The veteran starting pitcher is off to the Chicago Cubs, who could definitely use an upgrade to their rotation. The return? A couple of prospects outside their top-10 farmhands.
So who won this deal? And what are the details? As always, we've got all of that information for you including grades to hand out for both sides. Let's discuss.
Cubs get: RHP Kevin Gausman
Blue Jays get: SS Ty Southisene and OF Brett Bateman
You knew they were likely going to fall short on acquiring Tarik Skubal. The Tampa Bay Raysended up with Freddy Peralta. Getting Gausman for a couple of prospects isn't the flashiest move of the bunch, but maybe it'll pay off. Gausman had a 3.68 ERA last year, but the 35-year-old has a 4.81 ERA in 2026. The hope is a change of scenery helps and that pitching for a contender motivates him. The price is low and the upside is there, so that's something. GRADE: B
Gausman was past his prime and will face free agency, so the return wasn't going to be a ton. Bateman is the 21st-ranked prospect -- per MLB.com -- in the Cubs' system and is a solid hitter who doesn't have a ton of power. Southisene was their 13th-best prospect (he's got some speed to his game). This is Toronto getting something when it might have lost Gausman for nothing in the offseason. Sure! GRADE: C+
