Kentucky Basketball has had its eyes on Serbian forward Nikola Kusturica as they maneuver through the off-season, and had to be “wowed” Sunday when he scored 37 points in a loss to Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.

Serbia’s loss to the United States earned them the silver medal — their highest finish ever in the U17 Basketball World Cup — and will likely lead to an announcement soon regarding Kusturica’s college destination now that the tournament is over.

Less than three weeks ago, it looked like head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats were becoming the favorites to land Kusturica for the upcoming season.

However, it appears that Mick Cronin and UCLA are now leading the charge for his services after offering a reported $12 million NIL package.

While this is not devastating news, it definitely stings. Seeing what he can do in a game like yesterday definitely hurts for down the road, but as this Kentucky team is constructed, they should still be okay without him.

Barring the unexpected change of heart from Kusturica, the Wildcats will move on with their offseason as they prepare for the fall semester to begin next month in Lexington.
