Kamehameha junior Paliku Chang pulled off quite a double in the Northwest Regional Wrestling Championships at Centralia, Wash., on Sunday.
Chang, who won his first state title with a 7-5 victory over Pearl City’s Jaden Thai last month, swept the freestyle and greco divisions at the elite event. He won each of his five matches by stoppage in freestyle, stopping his finals opponent in 2 minutes, 15 seconds. He did the same in the greco competition, winning the first-place match in 1:28.
Officials at USA wrestling say that he is the second Hawaii athlete to win both disciplines on the same day. Travis Lee of Saint Louis did it in a national tournament.
Pearl City’s Nevaeh Lavarias took second in freestyle and third in greco at 120 pounds. They move on to the national championships in July in Fargo, N.D.
Over on the East coast of the continent, two-time HHSAA champion Analu Woode of Nanakuli won at 113 pounds in the sophomore division of the NHCSA High School Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., topping his finals opponent 2-1 on a reversal with 1:35 left in the match. Woode won his previous matches by scores of 22-7, 5-0, 13-2, 3-0, 22-4 and 16-1.
Mixed duo is first to claim four-ball title
Braydn Sato and Kady Matsumoto fired a 7-under par 64 to win by two strokes over Carson Kage/Leo Saito to become the first “co-ed” team to capture the championship flight in the history of the HSGA Four-Ball Stroke Play.
The event concluded Sunday at Ted Makalena Golf Course under sunny and breezy conditions.
Sato is a freshman golfer at Hawaii Pacific University while Matsumoto is a Mililani High School senior.
Rainbow Sailors dominant at fleet invite
The University of Hawaii sailing team delivered an outstanding performance on home waters, placing all five fielded squads in the top five to sweep the inaugural Hawai’i Fleet Race Invite, held at Keehi Lagoon on Saturday and Sunday.
The Rainbow Sailors displayed their depth to beat a visiting field that included teams from Arizona State, UC San Diego, and UNC Wilmington. Sixteen racing sets were completed throughout the weekend, with A and B divisions racing for each team.
Leading the charge was the Rainbow Green team, which claimed the overall crown with a regatta-low 148 points.
Fresno Pacific tops Chaminade in baseball
Fresno State’s baseball team defeated Chaminade 11-0 in seven innings on Sunday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Cade Fujii had two hits for the Silverswords (7-26, 5-23 in the PacWest). The Sunbirds are 19-15, 14-8.
