Who doesn’t love “The Highlight”?

Justin Gaethje is the most exciting fighter in UFC history — and he just pulled off something that Hollywood couldn’t even script.

As a 5-to-1 underdog against Ilia Topuria, who was on his way to becoming one of the best fighters the sport has ever seen, Gaethje beat the life out of him and sent him to the hospital on the tail end of his own legendary career.

And on top of that, he finally won the undisputed UFC Lightweight championship — the one thing he set out to accomplish when he began this insane journey (watch highlights).

Oh, and it was at UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., as UFC celebrated America’s 250th anniversary.

For a proud American like Gaethje, it could not have been any more perfect.

It was a story that was never supposed to happen.

Gaethje fought for the undisputed championship twice before and got finished both times. First, against Khabib Nurmagomedov, one of the greatest fighters of all time. Then, against Charles Oliveira, in front of a home crowd in Arizona.

After losing his second title fight, Gaethje became the “BMF” champion by knocking out Dustin Poirier with one of the cleanest head kicks you’ll ever see (watch it). And honestly, if anyone should hold onto the “BMF” title forever, it is Gaethje.

But at UFC 300, Max Holloway slept him in one of the most viral knockouts of all time — and will go down as one of the greatest knockouts in the history of the sport — by a guy who is not exactly known for one-punch knockout power.

That was in 2024.

Two years later, when Gaethje was past his prime, he handed Paddy Pimblett his first UFC loss (watch highlights) and then destroyed Topuria to finally become undisputed Lightweight champion.

He sent both of them to the hospital.

If there was ever a perfect time to put down the gloves and call it a career, it would be now.

Because it will never get better than this.

Winning the undisputed Lightweight title at the White House, as a massive underdog, against an absolute stud who looked almost unbeatable.

That is movie stuff.

And if Gaethje does walk away, just know this: we will never, ever, ever get another fighter like him.

Gaethje has said multiple times that he does not expect to wake up alive after his fights because of how much he puts himself into the fire every single time he competes. And that is not fake tough-guy talk. That is exactly how he fights.

Every single time.

In 16 UFC fights, Gaethje has earned 17 post-fight bonuses. He owns the most “Fight of the Night” bonuses in UFC history with 11. He is the only fighter in UFC history to win a post-fight bonus in each of his first seven UFC bouts. He is also tied for the third-most knockouts in UFC Lightweight division history with seven.

That is absurd.

He is violent. He is must-watch television. And he has done all of this in the toughest division in mixed martial arts: UFC Lightweight.

There have been better resumes. There have been longer title reigns. There have been cleaner technicians. There have been more dominant champions.

But nobody has ever been more reliably thrilling than Gaethje.

Nobody.

When he fights, you stop and watch.

Like I said, there will never be another fighter like him. Gaethje is a one-of-one fighter, the most exciting fighter in MMA history, and the kind of athlete who reminds you why this sport is so damn addicting in the first place.

But more than anything, Gaethje is your favorite fighter’s favorite fighter.

And after UFC Freedom 250, he is finally what he always wanted to be.

Undisputed.
