XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey explained how Sophie Cunningham became an advocate against trans inclusion in women’s sports.
Sey and Riley Gaines have been two of the biggest voices against trans athletes being included in women’s sports, with Sey having her entire athletics brand dedicated to making that distinction.
After Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham publicly supported their views and met with Sey and Gaines at a WNBA game, the movement grew much bigger.
Jennifer Sey reveals Sophie Cunningham has been feeling like this since 2024
In an interview on Fox, Sey revealed that Cunningham has been engaging with her social media posts since October 2024, with the pair sharing DMs over the years before Cunningham publicly allied herself with their movement.
“She has been liking our videos and sharing them since October 2024. We’ve had some communication by DM, which I will not reveal because it’s private, but I knew she was on our side.”
“I’m so pleased to see her standing her ground… She said what she said, she’s not bending the knee, she’s not backing down, and will take whatever she gets. She’s the star we needed to put this at the center of the cultural conversation… We deserve to win this, and we deserve it now.”
Sey directly stated that this isn’t with the intention of starting a culture war, but ended that same sentence with a proclamation about winning the same.
Cunningham has tried distancing herself from her comments after they became an active distraction for the Playoff-hungry Fever roster, but the fallout continues following her.

If WNBA fans and players continue marginalising Cunningham for her views, she is naturally going to gravitate towards prominent voices like Sey and Gaines, who support her point of view on the matter.
Former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White have now declared for the WNBA Draft to force the league office to make regulation changes to limit access to biological men in the future.
Cunningham’s public comments led to most of this, highlighting Sey’s assertion that Sophie was the star they needed to put this matter at the center of cultural conversations. Now it’s there, and it won’t be going anytime soon.
